All workshops have a two-hour break for lunch (12pm–2pm).
Meals: Pre-workshop breakfast and lunch are available for purchase.
Supplies: A link is included to each workshop’s Supply List. Sewing machines are not provided, so, if required, bring your own!
Kit fees: If listed, Kit fees are payable to the instructor at the workshop.
Refunds: Feb. 17 is the last day to cancel workshop registration with refund minus $10 service fee. No refunds after Feb. 17.
Sold Out: If a workshop is sold out, contact IHQS@ihqs.org to be put on a wait list.
Walk-ins on the day of the workshop are welcome, if space is available. We encourage registering early!

Mary’s floral offering with kathy dunigan

This beautiful 23" x 26" work of art is a nod to Mary Manakee and her 1850 quilt. Kathy has found the perfect balance of fabric and design to set together a small quilt or wall- hanging that will make your heart sing. Baltimore Album quilts are like none other and this lighthearted rendering of flowers in a vase will be the perfect addition to your repertoire of quilts. You'll get a chance to sew on a provided sample and when you are ready, you'll be able to soar! You'll get to try some silk ribbon rosebuds and adorn your quilt. What a great day of learning we'll get to share together!

papercut Appliqué with kathy dunigan

At first glance, this wall hanging looks of Hawaiian origin, but uses patterns (you can design your own or use Kathy’s!) based on Baltimore album quilt style from the 1850's. Kathy will teach you the absolute easiest prepared edge technique with appliqué foundation product left in (used for hand or machine alike) and then help you get the fabulous machine appliqué results you desire! Fun workshop with awesome design possibilities. Learn the technique with a provided sample and then fly!

Belle of the south with kathy dunigan

Kathy has an easy way to make Broderie Perse (French for Persian embroidery) beautiful and fun! Fabrics in your kits will assure you can design a unique wall hanging. Learn Kathy’s unique way of using this fabulous technique, BUT with a twist! Quickly learn to cut out the fabric motif, then use her prepared edge appliqué technique to ready the motif and place on background. Kathy will demonstrate how to appliqué Hand or Machine. Whimsical flowers cut from reproduction fabric, embroidery work and beads add up to a creative and fun workshop. Choose a light or dark background for your 23" kit.

Beach Bumz with linda hahn

A traditional setting for the New York Beauty block in modern batik fabrics. You can choose to make the quilt with or without borders. Or change the fabrics for a different "flavor" for your quilt.  

Learn Linda's unique technique for creating perfect New York Beauty blocks on your first attempt using just ONE pin (with no puckers or cussing!). The technique is quite empowering and addicting.

Add a modern flair to a traditional quilt block with this design. It goes together so fast, you’ll want to try other colorways! There’s plenty of open space to have even more fun with your quilting designs!

Learn Linda’s unique technique for creating perfect New York Beauty blocks on the first attempt using just ONE pin! Throughout the workshop, Linda shows how you can make an optional miniature New York Beauty quilt using the scraps and cutaways from the main project.

Bermuda Sunrise with Linda Hahn

Let’s play with scraps! This wall quilt uses just (72) pairs of 6” (or 6-1/2”) squares! You probably have them in your stash right now. Linda demonstrates how she “deals” out her fabrics and plays with colors. Students can choose to make the quilt larger or to experiment with different layout options that are provided in the pattern. It’s fun, It’s easy.

The EVIE with TARA Miller

Thursday, March 6, 9am-5pm
We’ll take inspiration from a vintage quilted coverlet made by Eveler Blankenship in Kansas in 1970. These scrappy string kaleidoscope blocks are fun to make and go together quickly. Use up your scraps or cut up assorted fat quarters – it’s up to you!
Techniques taught include Improv, scrap-busting, and foundation muslin piecing.
Specialty templates are available for purchase, but are not required.

Magic of Mixing Prints with tara miller

Combining prints from different lines and manufacturers can make your quilts zing! Get unstuck. Get confident.

In this workshop, learn how to combine colors, motifs, and styles of fabric to elevate your quilting projects. Let’s leave the boring behind!

CHURNED UP! with TARA MILLER

Saturday, March 8: 9am-4pm
Churned Up is a modern take on the classic Churn Dash block — kinda what happens if you put the Churn Dash in a blender and toss it up! Works great with a layer cake, but students can certainly also start with 10″ squares from their stash! This is a fun pattern to showcase some of your favorite fabrics — from reproduction to holiday to ultra modern.

FOLK ART STITCHING with Catherine redford

Thursday, March 6: 9am-5pm
Start by learning, or being reminded of, some basic embroidery stitches on a specially designed pre-printed sampler and then learn some novel embellishment techniques to add to the fun. Learn how Catherine transfers her own designs onto dark colored backgrounds. Enjoy the relaxed tempo and reconnect with hand work!.

Dimensional Hand Embroidery with Catherine redford

Add some more advanced dimensional stitches to to your embroidery vocabulary as you work on your choice from a selection of pre-printed fabric samplers. Learn crested chain stitch, double cast-on, drizzle, trellis and lots more!

Successful Machine Quilting with CINDY SEITZ-KRUG

Thursday, March 6: 9am-5pm
This workshop is designed for people who have never done any machine quilting before or those who would like a refresher course. We will have a discussion on threads, needles, batting, and quilting feet. Then we will learn to use a walking foot for straight line foundation quilting and decorative quilting. Includes extensive coverage of free motion continuous line designs, feathers, and stippling. You will also learn how to handle large quilts on your domestic sewing machine. Gain the confidence and skills to finally quilt your own quilts on your home sewing machine!

Gorgeous Gridded Quilting Designs with CINDY SEITZ-KRUG

In this workshop you will learn eight different free-motion background designs. Our sample piece will be a beautiful wholecloth wallhanging or pillow-top. From pebbles to swirls, you will love these simple yet beautiful fill designs that will add lovely texture to all of you quilted projects.

BLOOMERS with KAREN K STONE

Thursday, March 6: 9am-5pm
With just three basic shapes and three blocks, we can create the impression that there’s a lot more going on here than there really is. We’ll cover good basic machine appliqué technique (turned edge) and a unique way to connect everything with amazing precision. We will focus on the central portion of the quilt and discuss the patchwork in the corners. Sewing machine optional.

Gentle Curves with KAREN K STONE

Friday, March 7: 9am-5pm
While curved piecing can be intimidating at first, with good technique and a little practice, it can become positively addictive. The gentle curves here are a great introduction, and a wonderful light/dark palette opens a great discussion on how to make your fabrics speak eloquently. Pattern graphic provided.
