Corn and soybean crops in various stages of harvest, foraging Canadian Geese and Sandhill Cranes, gray skies, a dusting of snow on rich earth were the inspiration for the colors in these hand-pieced Farmer’s Delight blocks

Source of Design:  Farmer’s Delight Blocks, found on an antique quilt.

Made By:  Gail Stepanek.

Quilted By:  Monica Troy.

Entry #404 “Symbolic Remnants” Carol Taylor Pittsford, NY

"Symbolic Remnants" by Carol Taylor

Variations of a modified ancient Aztec spiral motif playing against my woven linear lines create a rhythmic pulse in this work.  The six different sizes were cut individually and improvisationally.  The larger motifs amplify the smaller ones, creating the slight differences in pattern and proportion as each row is scanned.  The palette takes one straight to Mexico and the Southwest using my own version of these symbols.

“The Linear Series”  This series is based on using lines as the focus of design.  All of the work has been created without rulters, using freely cut strips of hand-dyes fabrics that are improvisationally pieced.  There are now 17 pieces in the series.

Source of Design:  Original.

Made and Quilted by:  Carol Taylor.

Prize Awarded - $100

Entry #416 “Eda’s Lilies” Tone Haugen-Cogburn Maryville, TN

"Eda's Lilies" by Tone Haugen-Cogburn

This quilt is made for my daughter’s high school graduation in May of 2007.  She was born in North Carolina and the Carolina Lily block was my inspiration.  I redesigned the block into a circular setting of various background fabrics.  The borders are my own random curved pieced technique.

Source of Design:  Original.  Inspired by the Lily block, but with an original setting and original border.

Made and Quilted By:  Tone Haugen-Cogburn.

Pieced Professional - Honorable Mention

Entry #405 “Ring of Fire” Lois Vincent Noblesville, IN

"Ring of Fire" by Lois Vincent

According to Judy Martin, the toile background sets the style for this quilt.  The small gold squares dance around the dark stars.  The rich golds and black frame it well.

Source of Design:  Judy Martin’s “Scraps” Book.

Made By:  Lois Vincent.

Quilted By:  Jennifer Cunningham,
