Applique Professional, First Place

Prize Awarded - $500

Entry #201 “Subtle Sixties” Linda M. Roy Knoxville, TN

"Subtle Sixties" by Linda M. Roy

Original designed on graph paper.  Inspired by the border on my last quilt.  The feathers were freehand-drawn and quilted in metallic thread.  By embroidering on one side of the feather, it added a unique spiral effect.  My last quilt also had tomato red which everyone referred to as orange.  I thought it fun to prove my point with “orange” in this piece.

Source of Design:  Original.

Made and Quilted By:   Linda Roy.

Entry #206 “When Two Fond Hearts Unite” Lahala Phelps Bonney Lake, WA

"When Two Fond Hearts Unite" by Lahala Phelps

When two fond hearts unite—the yoke is easy—the burden light.  This verse from an antique sampler was my inspiration for this Bride’s Quilt.  I used traditional blocks, one block from Robert Callahan’s Album Quilt and blocks of my own design.

Source of Design:  Original and traditional blocks with one block by Robert Callahan.

Entry #202 “Victorian Rosette” Jean Lohman Galesburg, IL

"Victorian Rosette" by Jean Lohman

Victorian Rosette grew from a combination of two yards of an elegant print and a small, ornamental, ceiling design.  I enlarged the rosette design and the remainder developed as I chose complimentary fabrics to appliqué the rosette.  The variety of quilting stitches is done with 100 wt. silk thread.

Source of Design:  “Victorian Patterns and Designs”, copy-free Dover Book.
